I am feeling a bit daunted as I read posts on how far some of the Spinners have gone in writing their new anthology stories. Other than some research and a first paragraph (and a lot of mulling over in my mind), I've done so little on mine. Part of the problem is that I have so many irons in the fire at the moment. I've been working on polishing short stories to send to a new romance magazine, and raced like mad on the last day of submissions to get a novella into a publisher. I am launching my first ever free e-serial on my website on Valentine's Day, so have been working like mad on that. (www.desperatehearts.homestead.com if you want a little preview) And that's just the major stuff. There's the promoting of my existing work, and the editing and revising of things I want to submit before summer... Sigh....But I suppose, in the end, all will get done.
I've set my Spinner's story just at the end of WW II. I'm in the process of figuring out how to get my American Devereux decendant, to Devon where the bulk of the story will take place. It's an interesting time in which to set a story. So much change has occurred. In fact, I get lost sometimes surfing around researching that I don't get much writing done (another reason why I'm so far behind my sister writers...lol)
BTW, I went to the tarot card site to find out which card I was. It came out as The Lover, but I couldn't figure out how to post it here on the blog. I'm a tad technologically challenged. :o)

Not alone Judy. Heaps of research and not enough writing. I have to get my hat on but am editing a novel at the moment so I can get that to print asap.
Too many pies are better than no pies at all,
I am going to open mine and set myself a page at least so I can maybe feel that I've done something constructive on the anthology. I like my characters and once I stop this researching bit (which I enjoy far too much)

I love the research too, and one of my favourite places to visit is etymology online. Words, their meanings, and what year they first came into common usage. Very, very handy.
My hero is American too.
I'm pushing myself to get my first draft done, then I'll let it stew for a few weeks before tackling it again. Everyone writes differently. Some get all their ideas and plots done first before writing. Others, like me, have some scenes and ideas and just hit it. The first draft is usually a disaster, but it gives me something to work with.

All that thinking and figuring out you're doing? It's called pre-writing and it's a necessary step. Our subconscious has got to process all the information we take in before it can form it into a cohesive literary form.
Interesting that we're all writing Americans!
But then, it does make sense. Often lesser sons who had little or no financial prospects in England would often leave for the New World to make a new life for themselves. There they could own property and have a whole bunch of other freedoms they would otherwise lack "back home".
As for pies, I've got a few, but they're all music-related. I've got several songs I want to finish. At least they don't have deadlines, unlike our stories.
